APU graduate ran as an Olympic Torchbearer

Sameera Gunawardena (2005 graduate) ran as an Olympic Torchbearer on May 16.

【Message from Sameera Gunawardena】
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, and I am so grateful to all the people who have supported me so far.
After graduating from APU, I had the good fortune to move to Ama Town in the Oki Islands in 2006. For the next 15 years, I have been working on regional issues in tourism in Ama Town and Okuizumo Town, where I currently live.
While working on issues in depopulated areas, I realized the importance of protecting the community. I am very happy that I have been able to convey my thoughts on working with the local people to enliven the region through tourism as a torch runner.

【To APU students】
My experiences in APU’s international environment have greatly changed my outlook on life. In my four years at APU, I have learned the importance and enjoyment of living together with people from different countries, while respecting their values.
I think it has been very difficult for everyone during the pandemic. I believe that the post-Corona world will be a society where diverse values coexist even more than now, and that the time you are spending now will turn out to be useful for the challenging future.
Let’s help each other get through this difficult time together.
